The Love for Rare Books

It was the love for old books and the aspiration for knowledge that pointed Heribert Tenschert's way after studying German and Romance languages and literatures: together with his wife Helga he founded an antiquarian book shop in the Bavarian village of Rotthalmünster in 1977. His first catalogue "Ästhetik des neueren Buchs" published in the same year clearly showed his attitude as a rare book dealer: to regard old books as works of art in their own right. Aspects like typography, illustration, the quality of paper and vellum, the art of binding, preservation and provenance are acknowledged as much as the literary and historical significance of the text.

Our primary mission is to give collectors competent advice on building up their collections. As a direct corollary of this focus we give great importance to the scientific descriptions of our books as well as to place them into a sociocultural and art historical context.

In 1993 he moved his head office to Bibermühle near Stein am Rhein in northern Switzerland where he had already played an important role in the founding of an antiquarian book bushiness in 1983. Since 1998, the company is housed in the carefully renovated barn of the historic Bibermühle on the banks of the Rhine river.

Jewels of the book market are the primary focus of our business: beautifully illustrated and scientifically researched catalogues present illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to an international public of collectors and scholars. In addition we continue to publish outstanding catalogues of other important rare books such as early or illustrated incunabula and illustrated books from all periods, especially the masterpieces of French 18th century engraving. Books printed on vellum, beautiful bindings from the last six centuries as well as modern artist-books and private press books round off our offerings. Our series Illuminationen consists of generously illustrated art historical monographs, which introduce special treasures from our collection. In view of the growing interest in illuminated manuscripts we have published several facsimile editions. It is our intention to continue making outstanding manuscripts available as high quality facsimile in limited editions.

We are always interested in acquiring whole collections or individual works of singular importance in our areas of expertise. If you have a collection of rare books we would be pleased to make you an offer without obligation. In addition, we offer expert advice and valuations for single items as well as libraries or estates.
